Nordic Nature Network kick-off

Published 21-05-2026

The Nordic Nature Network is now underway, bringing together municipalities from across the Nordics to turn global biodiversity goals into local action through a growing community of practitioners working with shared challenges and ambitions across borders.

The Nordic Nature Network is now officially underway

This week, municipalities from across the Nordics gathered for the first joint online kick-off – marking the beginning of a shared effort to turn global biodiversity goals into local action.

Because global targets only make a real difference when they are translated into concrete solutions in municipalities – where planning happens, citizens are engaged, and nature is restored.

A growing Nordic Network

A strong group of nature-ambitious municipalities has already joined the network. The map shows the current participating municipalities – and the network is still expanding.

As it continues to grow, it brings together professionals who, despite different local contexts, often work with very similar challenges, questions and ambitions.

Getting to know the network

As part of the kick-off, all participants gave short introductions, putting faces to the many dedicated professionals working with biodiversity across the Nordics. The exchange of perspectives, ideas and ambitions made it clear that this is not only a policy process, but a shared professional community built on engagement, curiosity and practical experience.

Across the presentations, a strong overlap in key themes emerged, including restoration of nature, planning tools, citizen engagement, monitoring approaches, and the implementation of biodiversity strategies – among many other topics and experiences shared across the network.

From goals to practice

Over the next two years, participating municipalities will work together to:

  • develop and test shared methods
  • translate global biodiversity goals into municipal practice
  • collaborate across Nordic borders
  • build knowledge through real-world implementation

Through mini pilot projects, peer learning and thematic collaboration, the network will develop practical tools and approaches that can support local biodiversity work across the region.
