Pargas Municipality

Pargas (Parainen) Municipality is located in south-western Finland, close to the growing Turku region and extending far into the Archipelago Sea. The municipality spans more than 10,000 islands and islets, making it one of the world’s largest archipelago municipalities by number of islands.

The municipality covers approximately 5,500 km², of which around 80% is water. The main island and the town of Pargas form the most populated part of the municipality and its main centre for services, employment and administration, while the municipality also includes the island communities of Nagu, Korpo, Houtskär and Iniö. Pargas is bilingual, with both Swedish and Finnish spoken, and its identity combines a strong archipelago heritage with industry, active communities and a distinctive maritime environment.

Ecological Characteristics

The landscape of Pargas is shaped by post-glacial land uplift and consists of rocky islands, shallow bays, forests and coastal meadows. The highly fragmented archipelago creates a diverse mosaic of habitats across land and sea.

The surrounding brackish waters support a mix of freshwater and marine species, while coastal ecosystems such as reed beds, sheltered bays and traditional grazed meadows are important for biodiversity. A large part of the southern municipality overlaps with the Archipelago Sea National Park, and the area is recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve due to its unique interaction between traditional land use and marine ecosystems.

Socio-Economics Characteristics

Pargas combines an urban centre and a strong industrial and employment base with extensive island and archipelago communities. Most of the population lives on the main island, while permanent communities across Nagu, Korpo, Houtskär and Iniö form an important part of the municipality’s social, cultural and economic life.

The local economy is diverse. Pargas has a strong industrial base, with limestone extraction and processing playing an important role for centuries. One of the largest open-pit limestone quarries in the Nordic region is located in the town of Pargas. Agriculture, fisheries, maritime services, shipping and tourism also contribute to the local economy, alongside a broad range of other businesses and services.

The maritime setting creates both opportunities and specific conditions for everyday life and economic activity. Sustainable use of marine and coastal resources, biodiversity and the developing blue economy are increasingly important perspectives for the future of the area.
