Tierps Municipality

Tierp Municipality is located in eastern Sweden, between Uppsala and Gävle. The municipality is predominantly rural, with Tierp as its main centre and a number of smaller communities and villages spread across the landscape.

The municipality has a long history shaped by agriculture, forestry and industry. Iron production played an important role in the development of the area, particularly around Söderfors and other historic industrial communities. Today, Tierp combines rural communities and local businesses with close connections to the larger regional city-centres.

Ecological Characteristics

Nature in Tierp Municipality is highly varied. Here, north and south, east and west meet. The broad plains in the south contrast with the fragmented and historic landscape of Hållnäs.

The flat coast is continuously changing as a result of land uplift. Despite extensive drainage, the municipality still contains large wetlands, including Florarna. Limestone-rich soils create a distinctive flora, with lady’s slipper orchids and other orchids particularly common.

At Nedre Dalälven, the river has created a remarkable landscape supporting rich biodiversity. Ledskär is known for its coastal meadows and rich birdlife, while the lakes Tämnaren and Vendelsjön are also important areas for birds. Parts of Tierp are included in the Nedre Dalälven Biosphere Reserve, highlighting the area’s natural and cultural values.

Socio-Economics Characteristics

Tierp has approximately 21,000 inhabitants, with Tierp as the largest settlement and local centre. Swedish is the main language spoken.

The local economy combines agriculture, forestry, manufacturing, construction, trade and services. The municipality’s rural character is reflected in its many small communities and businesses, while its location between Uppsala and Gävle provides connections to larger regional labour markets.

Sustainable development is integrated into the municipality’s work, including wetland restoration, measures to strengthen biodiversity and more sustainable management of natural resources. Tierp combines a strong rural identity with business opportunities and access to nature, while seeking to maintain viable communities and balance development with natural and cultural values.
